Juniper Canyon Large Mine Permit Approved by Division of Oil Gas and Mining

Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining (OGM) has approved South Valley Rock Products' large mine permit application for the Juniper Canyon development at 14822 S Juniper Crest Road in Herriman. The approval was made according to state rules and regulations.

South Valley Rock Products provided a complete mining plan that met all division requirements, including:

  • Posting a reclamation bond to ensure disturbed land will be restored to its original state or another condition agreed upon with the state.
  • Paying the annual large mine permit fee.

Staff will complete site inspections during mining operations to ensure mining occurs within permit boundaries and adherence to mine plans/regulations.

The division’s permit approval does not supersede the requirement for South Valley Rock Products to obtain all necessary federal, state, county and local permits.

The Juniper Canyon area, as outlined in Herriman City’s master plan, is being developed for commercial and residential use. This project involves removing excess bedrock to create space for homes and businesses. The removed bedrock is being transported off-site and sold, necessitating a large mine permit from OGM.

Director Thomas acknowledged residents' concerns about the mine's location and expressed his gratitude for the input shared at the December 4 public meeting and via email.
